How SAE came to Turin
For years the idea of an SAE section in Turin was in the air at the universities and in industry. In early 2007 it became a concrete plan, led by the Chamber of Commerce of Turin, which had promoted SAE among companies in Piedmont for more than two decades.

18 April 2007 · SAE World Congress
A Turin delegation led by Alessandro Barberis, President of the Chamber of Commerce of Turin, presents the candidacy of Turin to SAE International. Colleagues of SAE Napoli, until then the only SAE section in Italy, join the meeting.
SAE President Richard Schaum visits Turin
September 2007
Meetings with the universities, the City and Region, the industry association, CRF and the Chamber of Commerce, and visits to companies and research centres.
The petition
17 April 2008 · SAE World Congress
The delegation, led by Alessandro Barberis and Alberto Dal Poz, formally presents the petition to establish the group to SAE President Thomas Ryan III.
SAE Torino Group officially starts
23 September 2008
The group opens with around 300 SAE members in Piedmont, and the ambition to bring international conferences in automotive and aerospace to Turin.
In memoriam
Alessandro Barberis
Founder and Honorary President of the SAE Torino Group, who led the effort to bring SAE International to Turin in 2007 and 2008. He passed away in February 2024.
