JCB's Hydromax has set a new world land speed record for hydrogen-powered vehicles at the Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah, reaching an officially measured average speed of 406.320mph (653.909km/h). The vehicle is driven by two hydrogen internal combustion engines with a combined output of 1,600hp, and German supplier Poppe + Potthoff provided key components for its hydrogen supply system.

The drivetrain uses parts from Poppe + Potthoff's modular Topaq hydrogen supply system, including a high-pressure regulation unit, parallel charging units acting as distribution rails, and associated lines and adapters. Within the system, these components manage the demand-oriented delivery of hydrogen to the two combustion engines. Poppe + Potthoff worked closely with JCB across the development process, from early testing through to final integration of the system into the vehicle.

According to the supplier, particular attention was paid to interface design and integration, aimed at cutting system complexity without compromising stability or safety. The components underwent development and validation testing before being fitted to the Hydromax, where they were then proven under the extreme conditions of the record attempt.

Poppe + Potthoff CEO Markus Kerkhoff said the result demonstrates that hydrogen-based drivetrains can combine reliability with high performance even in demanding operating environments.
