
The Automated Vehicle Safety Consortium (AVSC), a program of SAE Industry Technologies Consortia (SAE ITC), has published a new best practice addressing remote assistance (RA) training and human factors for automated driving systems. The document targets organizations operating SAE Level 4 and Level 5 automated driving system-dedicated vehicles (ADS-DVs), where remote assistants play an operational role in supporting vehicle functions from outside the vehicle.
Unlike earlier AVSC publications that addressed RA use cases more broadly, this best practice zeroes in on the training frameworks, qualification processes, and performance assessment methods needed to prepare and evaluate remote assistants. It sets out a common baseline intended to help ADS developers and fleet operators build RA programs that are consistent and scalable across different deployment models, rather than relying on ad hoc, company-specific approaches.
AVSC frames the guidance as addressing the human factors side of automated driving deployment, alongside the technical development of the vehicles themselves. Executive Director Darcyne Foldenauer and Principal Engineer Erin McCurry both stressed that reliable remote assistant preparation and transparent operational processes are necessary complements to the underlying automation technology as deployments scale up.
