New Framework Establishes a Common Disclosure and Reporting Structure to Improve Consistency and Credibility of Light-Duty Vehicle Life Cycle Carbon Footprint Assessments

WARRENDALE, Pa. (Sept. 9, 2026) – SAE International® announces the publication of SAE J3341™: Carbon Footprint Methodologies for Light-Duty Vehicles, a new industry standard designed to bring greater transparency and comparability to automotive life cycle assessments (LCAs). The standard addresses a long-standing challenge in automotive sustainability reporting: the same vehicle data, analyzed by different LCA practitioners, can produce significantly different carbon footprint results due to a lack of standardized reporting practices.

"SAE J3341 provides the automotive industry with a common framework for disclosing the assumptions that materially influence a vehicle's life cycle carbon footprint, while preserving the flexibility needed for sound technical analysis. By improving transparency across vehicle technologies and regions, this standard will support better-informed decisions and strengthen confidence in automotive sustainability claims."

“Automotive LCAs have historically functioned as black boxes, where divergent practitioner choices make apples-to-apples comparisons nearly impossible,” said Laurel Nelson, Staff Sustainability Science Engineer, Product Development, Rivian, and Document Chair for the SAE J3341 Task Force. “With SAE J3341, we focused on creating a space for clear disclosure rather than restrictive calculation chains. The task force paired a structured disclosure addendum with a standardized, region-neutral scenario to give the industry a true reference yardstick for comparability while preserving the modeling flexibility that practitioners rely on.”

SAE J3341™ was developed by a task force representing a broad cross-section of the automotive and sustainability value chain, including automotive OEMs, tier-one suppliers, database providers, energy sector experts, academic researchers, and national laboratory representatives. Rather than imposing a single rigid calculation methodology, the task force aligned on a guiding philosophy that prioritizes transparency and comparability: requiring clear disclosure of key modeling assumptions alongside a standardized, region-agnostic reference scenario.

The standard introduces a structured Disclosure Addendum that can be appended to existing automotive LCA reports. It does not replace foundational international standards such as ISO 14040/44, but instead serves as a reporting guardrail built on three core pillars:

  • Methodology transparency: Requiring explicit disclosure of critical structural assumptions that materially influence carbon footprint results, such as the baseline analysis period, analysis scope, and technical data sources.
  • Unified reporting: Establishing a consistent way to present results across six standardized lifecycle stages, and standardizing vehicle composition tracking into uniform material categories.
  • A standardized scenario: Placing baseline reporting parameters on a region-neutral grid and fuel mix to minimize methodological inconsistencies and improve comparability across studies.

SAE International anticipates that future iterations of the task force will periodically review and update the standard's scope and baseline scenario assumptions to reflect the evolving global energy and technology landscape.
